South London beat maker Tenderlonious has made waves the last few years with his beautiful hyprid productions of jazzy, house, hip-hop and more. Part of the 22a crew alongside other killer groove experts Mo Kolours, Reginald Omas Mamode IV and Henry Wu, each new release on the label is always a must listen for us.
But we weren’t expecting something as magnificent as Tenderlonious’ 6-track On Flute EP. Centring his sound around the angelic fluttering of the silver woodwind, the EP flirts with afro and broken beat alongside cool jazz and hip-hop groove. The release is quite possibly his finest yet, and in our opinion something of a major highlight for music for 2016 (not to mention the aqua-themed cover artwork).
Today we premiere our favourite track off the release, ‘Song For My Father’. Pooling sounds from funk and disco, the 6 minute journey carries a house backbone as a wild flute spins notes around the place and fingers do dancing on the dark piano hammers. 70s antiquated soul strings bring richness to the groove and airy trills from the woodwind section breathe fresh life into the track thoughout. A guaranteed dance floor necessity to close up 2016.
